Letterboxd Review:

Props to the animators for making this happen. The animation and art style is absolutely gorgeous and much better than I was expecting for a movie not many people seem to talk about online. Anime is probably the best looking animation style in my opinion and I think it suits Street Fighter perfectly. If only we could get a Mortal Kombat movie like this…

Plenty of fan service and fun to be had in this movie. I’m new to Street Fighter and definitely don’t know much of the lore, so seeing what they do with some of the characters and their backstories was really cool. Also, the score and soundtrack went pretty hard.

I don’t have too many criticisms overall, but the two I do have are pretty big ones. The first one is the story, which I didn’t find all that interesting outside of the fan service. The villain was really cool but not complex enough to make the conflict as interesting as it could have been.

My second and biggest complaint is how it treats its female characters. Unlike a lot of the male characters, none of them have much depth outside of just a little with Chun-Li, and instead only serve to be the sex appeal of the movie, which I found odd for a franchise with a major part of its audience being teens.

The worst part of that was that I watched the movie on Prime Video. It said that there was nudity in the film, but only rated it 13+, making me think that it wasn’t much of anything at all. But, umm, I was definitely wrong to assume that. There is literally a shower scene in this movie that shows pretty much all of Chun-Li, which I found really unnecessary, unwarranted, and just plain gross. What makes it even worse though is that Guile several times refers to her as “kiddo,” implying that she’s young. Really just disgusting and really hurt my opinion on this movie that I had beforehand. I realized later on that I was watching the uncut version (which I didn’t know even existed), so I definitely would have watched the original version if I had known.

The only other thing I could say about this movie was that the voice acting was pretty mediocre, but I don’t think I can fairly criticize that as I watched the English dubbed version instead of the original one so I wouldn’t have to read subtitles on the treadmill.

I definitely liked this movie, but I think I need to watch the original Japanese version to fully appreciate it. It would maybe even bump up my rating to a 3.5.
