Letterboxd Review:
I went into this expecting very, very surface level entertainment, and to be honest it kind of was. However, it was far more funny and entertaining than I thought it would be, and I surprisingly enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
The performances from Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis were excellent. They obviously do a great job when their characters are in their normal bodies, introducing us to their typical day-to-day lives, and you really start to see why them switching lives would be as crazy as it would be. But once they switched was when I was really impressed by their acting. They both do a fantastic job imitating one another’s characters, and the way you see them start to get more and more familiar with one another’s lives, therefore making their acting as each other more believable to the other characters inside the movie, was extremely well done.
Even adding onto that, Curtis and Lohan had excellent chemistry with one another. Before everything got crazy, or “freaky,” the mother-daughter relationship was definitely a bit cliche and on the nose, but the on the nose part I think was what made the movie’s gimmick later on more entertaining. Once everything does get crazy though, their chemistry gets pretty hilarious and honestly was really good. The way that they tried to come to a mutual agreement was really fun, and the way their relationship developed throughout the movie was surprisingly decent.
This is a comedy movie foremost, so I definitely have to talk about that. Like I already said, this was far more funny than I was expecting, which was even more surprising since I have a very odd sense of humor. I really never know what comedies will make me laugh or not going into them. There were so many jokes, mainly from the daughter who was in the mom’s body, that were just absolutely hilarious and had my family and I laughing pretty hard. What made it the most funny, was how gross and awkward some of the situations she was in were. By far the funniest part for both me and my family was the motorcycle scene. Oh, and the little brother was pretty hilarious too. On the other side, the comedy with the mom who was in her daughter’s body definitely wasn’t as funny, but still absolutely had its moments.
When it comes to criticisms, I have two main ones. The first one is that the story is very surface level, so if you aren’t amused by the gimmick, character acting/chemistry, or especially the comedy, then you will probably get nothing out of this. There isn’t much of an emotional heartbeat to the story, which wasn’t a problem for me because of how funny I thought it was, but for others I could definitely see this being a pretty big issue. Now there were definitely a couple of heartfelt scenes though. I mentioned previously the way their relationship developed, and it was honestly pretty good for the most part, though there definitely could have been more. The way it ends was definitely executed well however. The other heartfelt part of this movie was a speech given by one of the two leads around the time of the climax that really surprised me by how touching it was. It ended the whole character arcs/journeys really well.
My other big criticism would most definitely have to be the character Jake. He’s your typical male interest at the beginning, and there wasn’t really anything wrong with him at first, but what they decided to do with him at the end was a little off putting and weird. Now, after they switch bodies, he’s a very, very odd character in a specific way I won’t spoil, but that was part of what was making the movie so funny. There was nothing wrong with him really until the end. It was just that the way it felt they were building his character, and where his character ended up at the very end didn’t really match up and was not at all what I was expecting, and honestly in the bad way.
I’m very curious to see where the sequel goes with him, though I have absolutely no idea if he’s in the movie or not. I’ve avoided pretty much all the trailers and marketing for it simply because I wasn’t originally interested, and I think I will continue to do that just because I kind of want to be surprised by what the second one has to offer since it’s getting surprisingly solid reviews.
